ISPS Code
ISPS Code Overview
- On account of the 9.11 terrorist attacks on the USA, the IMO has enacted the ISPS code in order to prevent terrorism at sea.
- Chapter 11-2 of SOLASand ISPS code were newly added.
- The IMO diplomatic conference held on Dec. 12, 2002 adopted the ISPS code (effective as of Jul. 1, 2004)

Key Contents
- Applicable Subjects
- Ships: international passenger ships, cargo ships of more than 500 tons gross tonnage and mobile offshore units (Korea has 383 ships in total.)
- Ports: The ports that are used by international ships (Korea has 28 trade ports).
- Each ship has to make its own security plan and must get approval from the government. After the government’s security review, they must keep the International Ship Security Certificate (effective for 5 years) with them.
- Each ship must attach her own identification number (IMO number) on the ship body on a permanent basis.
- A ship which does not keep an ISSCwill be banned for arrival to and departurefrom foreign countries.
- Every port has to make a security plan and get approval from the government after appointing a security officer for port facilities and conducting a port security assessment
